I fear we often misinterpret Jesus’ role in our lives. Who is He to me, to you? Is He the almighty ruler of the universe, the conqueror of evil, our best friend, or do we relegate Him to a supporting role?

My fleshly instincts are to work out whatever problem I’m facing. I pray, Jesus, help me overcome the anger and Unforgiveness toward someone who has wronged me. Look at this prayer carefully. I have placed Jesus in a supporting role. I have become the conqueror and Jesus, the helper. 

If I become the doer, my Lord cannot answer the prayer that doesn’t give Him control.

The effective petition will first recognize my helplessness to change me and then express my need for intervention. Putting self aside, I plead for Christ to conquer the spirit of Unforgiveness in me. My complete reliance and trust are not on me but on Him. Keep reminding me, Jesus, of who’s in charge, for the promise is:

Psalm 50:15

15 Call upon Me in the day of trouble;

 I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.”
