The Promise to Overcome
1 Corinthians 10:13
Living Bible
13 But remember this—the wrong desires that come into your life aren’t anything new and different. Many others have faced exactly the same problems before you. And no temptation is irresistible. You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it, for he has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape temptation’s power so that you can bear up patiently against it.
At first glance, this passage looks like what the world teaches. I have the power to overcome. I’m the one doing the work.
In my experience and what God is clear about through scripture is the opposite. I resist the enemy’s advances by allowing Jesus to do the work. Resisting temptation means refusing to accept or comply with the devil’s suggestions. Instead, I see my helplessness and submit to the mighty power of God to take responsibility for the outcome.
The promise is yes to those who resist by submission to a greater power than human nature. It’s much easier to stand against the onslaughts of temptation when I know the secret of Spiritual warfare. It’s Jesus and Him alone who wins.
